History is in Australia’s favour heading into the first Test at the Gabba on Thursday, but the momentum appears to be all going England’s way as they open their bid to successfully defend The Ashes for the first time in 24 years.

The stats tell you that Australia has not lost a Test at the Gabba in 22 years, while the last time England were successful in Brisbane was in 1986. In five trips to the ground since that victory, England have been hammered on four occasions, while the other one, the opening Test in the 1998-99 series, was ruined by rain.
