As Australian wildlife goes, the magpie is hardly a saltwater crocodile, but on Monday Ian Bell fell victim to one of the most common attacks on humans in the Brisbane area.

Telegraph Sport has learnt that Bell was playing golf when a magpie swooped at him, knocked off his sunglasses and cut his nose. The sunglasses saved him from possible serious injury because the birds are known to peck at the eyes first.

The bird then dived at a buggy carrying James Anderson and Stuart Broad, achieving in one swoop to land more bruises on England’s cricketers than any Australian has managed on this tour so far.
