All the talking finally stops and the action finally starts when England and Australia take to the field in Brisbane for the first Ashes Test.

Months of build-up will all count for nothing when Ricky Ponting and Andrew Strauss shake hands at the Gabba, with the first big decision being whether to bat or bowl first.

The pitch has been scrutinised from every angle by both teams in the days before the first Test, but it seems to be a good toss to lose with no definitive opinions being offered up by either side.

Steve Harmison’s infamous first-ball wide set the tone for a 5-0 whitewash four years ago, but after England’s confident warm-up wins and Australia’s miserable run there is hope that the tourists can get off to a flying start this time around.
