Something strange happened in the Adelaide nets yesterday.
Michael Clarke began his batting practice like a golfer whose swing has deserted him. He tried to drive but the ball went one way, then he tried again and it went the other. Rarely did it go where he wanted. He had the yips and as more and more balls failed to find the middle of the bat, his frustration grew.
Ricky Ponting, who was batting in the next net, cocked an ear and paused every now and then to see what was going on. When the captain was finished, he stood at the end of the vice-captain’s net and watched him closely.
