It has become clear that Xavier Doherty does not cut the mustard as a Test player.
The left-arm orthodox tweaker finished day three of the crucial second Ashes Test with figures of 0-120.
There are excuses at his disposal – including the fact the quicks have gone largely wicketless and leaving Doherty to bowl at established batsmen, his inexperience in Tests, and the docile pitch.
But Australia is desperately searching for a spinner to fill Shane Warne’s shoes and so far Doherty has done nothing to suggest his fledgling international career is going anywhere special.
On Adelaide Oval evidence, the Tasmanian relies too much on simple bounce and turn and doesn’t get enough of both. He rarely varies his pace and doesn’t have any sort of mystery ball the great spinners seem to have up their sleeves.
