Cricket Australia will make an announcement on Katich’s immediate future today but his Achilles tendon problems are believed to be serious.
It is a blow the home side does not need as it struggles gain a foothold to challenge England in a bid to regain the Ashes.
Katich has been Australia’s highest run scorer since returning to the Test side in 2008, scoring six centuries in his first 16 Tests as a born-again opener and averaging over 50 since assuming the top of order duties.
“Katto is obviously pretty sore by the way he was running in between wickets, I believe he’s had a scan done this afternoon,” said fellow veteran Mike Hussey yesterday.
