Ricky Ponting says Phil Hughes likely to replace Simon Katich in Perth, Andrew Strauss not concerned

Within 10 minutes of Australia captain Ricky Ponting anointing Phil Hughes as his next Test opening batsman, England skipper Andrew Strauss was confidently predicting his downfall.

The absence of Simon Katich for the rest of the Ashes and possibly beyond has left Hughes as the man to replace him, but it is impossible to contemplate this without remembering his struggles against the well-directed short ball during the 2009 Ashes series in England.

So while Ponting was confident that Hughes would be part of the team that attempts to retrieve a 1-0 series deficit, Strauss was equally assured his men would have him covered.

“Phil Hughes is the first one who comes to mind,” said Ponting.
