After three solitary Test wins in Australia in 20 years, the correct feeling for an English person after a 1-0 Ashes lead has been established should be smirking schadenfreude or gloating triumphalism.

But over the past few days, a most unworthy emotion started to brew. I began to feel pity.

Pity for Xavier Doherty, the ninth spinner to appear for Australia since Shane Warne retired, which must make it almost as many new Warnes as we have had new Bothams.

Who wants, in his first, and perhaps only, appearance in the baggy green, to be called club-level cannon fodder?
