England coach Andy Flower has hailed Alastair Cook‘s return to form and praised the opening batsman for silencing his critics in Australia.

The Essex star was under pressure going into the Ashes series, with question marks over his place in the side following a poor run of form.

But the 25-year-old has responded in magnificent style, scoring a double hundred in the First Test in Brisbane, and following that up with a second century during the crushing victory in Adelaide.

Flower told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Cook has played superbly. I’ve got tremendous admiration for him. He’s a strong young man and he’s got an incredible record for a young man.

“He’s our vice-captain which indicates leadership qualities that stand him in very good stead in any tight battle.
