Aussie cricket commentators have been a breath of fresh air on air

England’s victorious Ashes campaign was compelling enough in its own right to make sleep deprivation a palatable hardship. But for older cricket fans, who remembered the meagre fare of the BBC’s haphazard live screening of tours in the 1980s, the myriad opportunities to follow it seemed like a paradise, to paraphrase Philip Larkin, we dreamed of all our lives.

Alongside the over-by-over coverage, the internet has opened up the possibility of listening to commentary streams from Australia to complement Test Match Special’s excellent coverage, particularly during the shipping forecasts. And those tuning in to ABC, particularly its Grandstand Reflections end-of-play wrap, will have discovered rich baritone voices and fresh, quirky insights.

Cook and Bell make Aussies suffer

Alastair Cook made 189 for an aggregate of 766 series runs and Ian Bell (115) hit his first Ashes ton as England ran riot on day three of the final Test.

With Australia needing to win to avoid losing the series, their hopes looked bleak as the tourists reached 488-7.

That gave England a lead of 208 at stumps and represented a fine day’s work from a morning start of 167-3.

The only blemish was the latest in a long line of failures for Paul Collingwood, who was out for 13.

The 34-year-old has an average of 15.54 in his last 10 Test matches and may not get a chance to remedy it in the second innings.

Steve Waugh debates Ricky Ponting’s future

Ricky Ponting leaves the field after being caught by Paul Collingwood in the slips.

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh believes current skipper Ricky Ponting will quit international cricket if he loses the captaincy.

Ponting, who made 12 on Thursday as Australia scored 268 all out in Perth, is under increasing pressure following his side’s poor start to the Ashes.

Waugh told the BBC’s Test Match Special it would be “very hard” for Ponting to continue if he was no longer captain.

“I don’t know what would motivate him in that situation,” added Waugh.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed Graeme Swann to have a big impact on the Ashes series despite his poor performance in the first Test.

The off-spinner returned figures of 2-161 as England drew in Brisbane but Vaughan does expect Swann to improve.

“If there are runs on the board he’ll get confidence. In one Test he’ll produce, I’m confident,” said Vaughan.

Ian Bell hit a terrific 118 in an unbeaten partnership with Paul Collingwood (74) worth 198 as England enjoyed another good day in Australia.

Replying to Australia A’s 230, England reached 335-5 and have two days left to push for a win in the final warm-up match before the Ashes series starts.

They were in a bit of trouble when Kevin Pietersen fell for five to leave the score on 137-5 in chilly Hobart.

But Bell and Collingwood engineered a strong recovery in the final session.
