Smith takes on England in Hobart

Steven Smith took on England’s bowlers with some daring strokeplay as Australia A were bowled out for 230 on the opening day of their four-day game.

The 21-year-old Ashes squad member defied the bowler-friendly conditions at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval to hit five fours and one six in his 121-ball 59.

Smith’s fellow NSW spinner Steve O’Keefe top-scored with 66 from 116 deliveries as Australia A recovered from 5-66.

THE Ashes has become a circus. The selectors today named a 17-man squad for the first Test, beginning at Brisbane’s Gabba on Thursday week.

This is more than any overseas tour in living memory. Most overseas tours include 14 players, with Ashes tours extended to 15 or 16.

The biggest winner is modest Tasmanian left arm spinner Xavier Doherty, while the biggest loser is Phil Hughes, Australia’s regular batsman in waiting this past year, who has had a poor start to the season for NSW.
