Trott heroics keep England alive

Jonathan Trott’s calculating century ensured England stayed in the series with a 21-run victory that upset Australia’s national holiday in Adelaide. The tourists began the game needing to win and the scenario won’t change when they head to Brisbane for Sunday’s fifth ODI, but they have been boosted by an end to four consecutive limited-overs losses.

Trott’s perfectly timed 102 off 126 balls stood tall on a day that was meant to be a celebration of all things Australia, but the home supporters left unhappy as the series score-line in the seven-game contest settled at 3-1. Trott, bowling his steady medium pace, even managed the valuable breakthroughs of Cameron White (44) and David Hussey (28) to end the pair’s rescue act.

Victoria’s two most senior players have endorsed the retention of Australia’s all-pace bowling attack for the Boxing Day Test.

Captain Cameron White and vice-captain David Hussey both support an unchanged side from Perth, despite Melbourne’s conditions not being as overtly suited to pace as the WACA Ground.

David Hussey begs Australian selectors to pick him for third Test

David Hussey is as close as he’s ever been to playing Test cricket and has implored the national selectors to pick him for next week’s Third Test in Perth.

On the eve of Victoria’s three-day match against England, the usually self-depracating Victorian batsman sent a loud and clear message that he can do the job for Australia.

Hussey, 33, is one of a number of batsman – including his own teammate Cameron White – touted as the right man to fill the No.6 batting spot in an Australian Test side that was flogged by an innings and 71 runs in the second Test in Adelaide.

With opener Simon Katich out through injury and No.6 Marcus North under threat of being dropped, Hussey made no bones about declaring his credentials for the job.

“First and foremost I’ve played 10 years of first class cricket, I have 150 games under my belt, so I have lots of experience and I think I’m ready to go,” Hussey, the younger brother of in-form Test incumbent Michael, said before the Bushrangers’ final training session.
