Replacing Simon Katich for the third Test is the easy part for Australia. Deciding what to do with the rest of the side in Perth is the difficult bit.

Marcus North, Xavier Doherty, Doug Bollinger and Peter Siddle will be wondering if they still have a spot when the squad is named on Friday. Ricky Ponting and Andrew Hilditch discussed the make-up of the unit after the innings loss in Adelaide on Tuesday and had to decide how many changes to make – and whether any of them would make a difference.

The simplest decision surrounds the new opener. Phillip Hughes, who scored 86 not out in his last Test in March, is the leading candidate to come in for Katich on December 16, while Usman Khawaja would also be a capable choice. Every other issue is much more murky.

But the 31-year-old is in a confident mood and grateful for the chance he’s been given to help reclaim the Ashes.

Like fellow West Australian Michael Hussey, North heads into the first Test against England at the Gabba on Thursday still under pressure to keep his spot.

If he doesn’t produce it won’t be for lack of motivation and desire.

Test bats Michael Hussey and Marcus North failed to make an impact as the Warriors recovered from a quiet start to post 6-319 at stumps on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the MCG.

Hussey was dismissed for a duck and North made just 17 after the Warriors were sent in on a deck that offered few surprises.

Adam Voges and a rampant Mitchell Johnson wrested the momentum for Western Australia late in the day and will resume on Thursday morning at 91 and 82 respectively.
