Boycott: Australia must gamble

Teams are now so scared of weakening the batting but for Australia it is a case of needs must. It is gambling time. Not quite the last throw of the dice, but it will require some special improvements from various individuals in the Australian team to stop England.

I know Australia need to take 20 wickets to win the game but in my view batting has let them down. They have not had enough solid top-order performances so it is a bold and positive decision by the selectors to go down this route. It is also a great novelty to pick two spinners at Perth.

Chris Adams backs ‘softie’ Chris Tremlett to rough up Australia

Chris Adams, the Surrey manager, says Tremlett should not be underestimated simply because he is not the type to shout in batsmen’s faces. And if the fast bowler is picked to replace Stuart Broad for the third Test in Perth next week, Adams is backing him to succeed.

“He can be a horrendous person to face, as awful as any bowler I have faced in my career,” Adams said.

“You don’t have to be a nasty, fasty, shouty, up-and-at-’em kind of character to make life very unpleasant for the opposition. I would rather take his type over someone who comes in and shouts and screams at everyone.”
