Michael Clarke has defended Phillip Hughes against Ian Botham’s accusation of cheating and also cleared Ian Bell for not walking to a ball he was later shown to edge. Hughes was unsure whether he caught Alastair Cook at short leg, momentarily celebrating the dismissal before asking whether it had carried.

Cook, who was on 99, stood his ground and stayed when the replays showed the ball bouncing in front of Hughes. Botham was quick to criticise Hughes while commentating on Sky Sports. “Terrible,” he said. “Cheating. How much do you want it to bounce into your hands? He knows he hasn’t caught it.”

Injured Australian opener Simon Katich has revealed he is set to make a shock return in time for the fifth Ashes Test, increasing the pressure on Phillip Hughes to find form in the Boxing Day shoot-out in Melbourne.

Katich damaged his achilles tendon during the second Test loss in Adelaide and was initially expected to miss the rest of the summer.

But the veteran left-hander told Sportal on Tuesday that his comeback plans are ahead of schedule and he may be right for the Sydney Test, starting January 3.

Hughes confident he won’t short out

Phillip Hughes is sick of defending his play against the short ball, but unless he can prove to England’s fast men that he can cope over the next week, the questions will keep coming on and off the field. Last year Hughes started the Ashes tour as Australia’s wonder child and left it with the reputation of being weak against bouncers.

Steve Harmison roughed Hughes up in a tour match and then handed over the duties to Andrew Flintoff as they had him hopping even more awkwardly than usual with his jumpy, country-made technique. He was dropped after two Tests and has played only two games since then, with the high being a frenetic 86 not out against New Zealand. Simon Katich‘s heel injury has allowed him a chance at Ashes redemption.

North dropped, Michael Beer in Test squad

Marcus North, Doug Bollinger and Xavier Doherty have been axed, and Australia’s selectors have sprung a major surprise by naming the little-known spinner Michael Beer in their 12-man squad for the Perth Test. Phillip Hughes has been picked to replace the injured Simon Katich, while Steven Smith is a strong chance to play after no other specialist batsman was named to replace North.

Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus are also likely to come back in to the side in what could be a four-man pace attack with Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle, who the selectors considered the best of the bowlers in the Adelaide loss. But it’s the inclusion of Beer that will raise eyebrows, especially with Nathan Hauritz fresh from a first-class century and five-wicket haul for New South Wales.
