Ponting wants ‘whole structure’ reviewed

Ricky Ponting believes the standard of domestic cricket in Australia has slumped and the entire structure of Australian cricket needs to be reassessed after the Ashes defeat to England. Cricket Australia will review what went wrong after the hosts lost three of the five Ashes Tests by an innings, and Ponting expects the process to be rigorous in order to ensure the mistakes of the past few years are not repeated.

“There is a review after every season, of which I’m always a big part,” Ponting wrote in his column in the Australian. “I understand there will be a lot more involved in the review this time around and rightly so. It’s going to be a lot more in-depth than I’ve ever been involved in and probably as big as those conducted when Australia was really struggling in the mid-80s. There are a lot of things that need looking at and I fully support such a review.

Australia in crisis, but also in denial

Michael Clarke does not think Australian cricket is in crisis, but there can be no other description after what has happened over the past seven weeks. The elite game in the country has collapsed on and off the field during a record Ashes thrashing, from coaching and selection to more mundane matters like batting and bowling.

Despite all of this James Sutherland, the chief executive, is happy with the head coach, the selectors and the players – just not the result. Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, is not resigning and is pleased with the form of the four decision makers. “I think we’ve done a very good job as a selection panel, but the reality is we were totally out-played,” he said. He was being serious.

Paul Collingwood to quit Test cricket

England‘s Paul Collingwood has announced his retirement from Test cricket at the age of 34.

The Durham batsman, who has scored 4,259 runs in 68 Tests at an average of 40.25, will step down after the final Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney.

Collingwood is England’s Twenty20 captain and will continue to play limited-overs cricket for his country.

“Now is the time to ensure some of the younger players get an opportunity at Test level,” said Collingwood.
