Steven Smith’s all-round skills are so well honed that he’s been asked to be the side’s funny man in his first Ashes Test. In a strange request for a 21-year-old, Smith has been called to boost the morale of Australia’s struggling outfit as well as provide runs at No.6 and wickets with his legspin.

“I’ve been told that I’ve got to come into the side and be fun,” Smith said at the WACA. “For me, it’s about having energy in the field and making sure I’m having fun and making sure everyone else around is having fun, whether it be telling a joke or something like that. It’s to make sure we’re all upbeat and we’re ready to go. I think that’s something I can bring to this side.”

Selectors count on Smith to inject youthful exuberance

Steve Smith intends to make England lament the day he rejected their invitation to wear their Three Lions after being named to replace Marcus North as the home team’s No.6 batsman and part-time bowler.

Smith, who took 4-112 and then belted a match-sealing 46 in the victory over South Australia at the SCG, was asked to align himself to England five years ago when the English became aware the promising leg-spinner’s mother was born there after he snared a Shane Warne-like 6-14 for Surrey’s Second XI against Kent.

It was seen by many as a short-cut to playing Test cricket, but Smith remained true to the dream that was fostered in a backyard ”hit” when he was only four years old to one-day play for Australia in an Ashes series.

Unkown West Australian spinner Michael Beer is the bolter in Australia’s 12-man squad for the third Ashes beginning in Perth next Thursday.

Beer replaces fellow left-arm tweaker Xavier Doherty while Marcus North and Doug Bollinger have also been dropped from the team which lost the second Test in Adelaide by an innings and 71 runs on Tuesday.

Despite poor form for NSW this season Phil Hughes has been chosen to replace the injured Simon Katich while Steve Smith has replaced North following a strong bowling performance for NSW against South Australia with his leg-spinners.

Ben Hilfenhaus, 12th man in Adelaide, remains in the squad and is expected to play while Mitchell Johnson has been recalled.

Beer, 26, made his debut for WA this season and has played just five first-class matches, claiming 16 wickets at an average of 40.

Test hopeful Steve Smith continued to mount a strong case for Ashes selection as NSW moved in on outright victory over South Australia at the SCG, collecting two wickets late on day three to take his tally to six for the game.

With the Australian team for the third Test in Perth to be announced Friday afternoon, Smith ensured his name would be at the forefront of selectors’ minds with another impressive performance.

After taking 4-57 in the first innings, the leg spinner again bowled with great control and variation, troubling all the batsmen and picking up the wickets of Tom Cooper (41) and Aiden Blizzard (3).

He boasted the handy figures of 2-64 when bad light stopped play at 6.09pm local time with the visitors 4-178 in their second innings.
